With the launch of Season 7 fast approaching, Sea of Thieves developer Rare is announcing that the release date has been changed.

Since its rocky launch in 2018, Sea of Thieves developer Rare has managed to keep the ship stable. The transition to a seasonal content model has done very well for the title, and the upcoming Season 7 will change the pirate adventure even more. However, in an early announcement, Rare announced that the debut of the latest season has been delayed until later this summer.

Sea of ThievesSeason 7 was announced at the Xbox Showcase held last month. The latest season would bring a lot of changes to the cosmetic side of the pirate title. Appropriately titled Captaincy, the new season will provide players with the opportunity to make massive changes to their ships, such as naming them and changing the look of their cabins. It is also set to introduce a new form of currency to allow for an easier method of selling loot. The season was supposed to start on July 21, but that date has since changed.

In a developer post, executive producer Joe Neate shares an update on the progress of the season. Aside from sharing excitement and mentioning that Season 7 would bring some big changes, Neate mentions that as launch quickly approached, the team realized many of the upcoming changes needed more time to work on. He explains that the new season will introduce a slew of new stats to track, and this will require a deeper collaboration between the “Game, UI, and Service teams” to make it happen flawlessly. The latest season now kicks off on August 4.

Neate also says that this decision was made to ensure that the fans’ overall experience was the best it could be and that the Rare team can continue to operate in a healthy and sustainable manner. Season 6 has been a long one for players, he says, but August will be a busy month with the new season and new Adventure launching two weeks later.

Delays are never fun to experience, but because the delay is so small, the reception from most fans has been positive. Given that Sea of Thieves is a live service product since its launch in 2018, it’s only fair that the team behind the long-standing pirate adventure is getting a break in light of the fact that crunch is a huge problem in the industry. With Season 6 being extended due to a delay, it’s now time for players to wrap things up before the official end of the season arrives in a few weeks.

Sea of Thieves is now available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
