Is your TV showing a black screen or ‘No signal’ message when connected to your PlayStation 5? The problem could be a faulty HDMI cable, dirty or damaged ports, incorrect video input (on TV), etc.

This post highlights troubleshooting steps to try if your PS5 won’t connect to TVs or monitors.

1. Check your PS5 indicator light

Your PS5 should display a solid white indicator light when powered on. If the console does not display any light, it is turned off and no video signals are being sent to your TV. A solid amber indicator light means your PS5 is in rest mode. Turn your PS5 on or take it out of rest mode to restore the images.

press the Current on the console or press the PS button on the PS5 controller. Then wait a few seconds and check if your TV is displaying images from the console.

If your PS5 indicator is a pulsating red light, please contact PlayStation Support. That means the console is overheated and needs servicing.

2. Restart your PS5

The console will freeze if your PS5 shows a solid blue light or keeps blinking white or blue light. Restarting the console may fix the problem.

Unplug your PS5’s power cord, wait 60 seconds, and then plug the console back in. Make sure the HDMI cable is properly connected and turn the console back on.

3. Reconnect the HDMI cable

Loose cable connections can interfere with the video signal transmission from your PS5 to your TV. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into your TV port and make sure it goes all the way in.

Plug the other end of the cable into the HDMI port on the back of your PS5 console. Make sure the connection is secure, but don’t insert the cable too hard or damage the HDMI port.

Turn on the PlayStation 5 and set your TV’s input source to the HDMI connection the console is connected to.

4. Check the TV video input source

The PlayStation 5 console connects TVs and monitors via High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). If your television or monitor has multiple HDMI ports, make sure the video input source is set to the HDMI port your PS5 is connected to.

Keep pressing the “Input” or “Source” button on the TV remote until it displays images from the HDMI input your PS5 is connected to. Again, make sure your PS5 is turned on while changing your TV’s input source.

5. Disconnect HDMI accessories

HDMI splitters (or HDMI switchers) allow you to share audio and video signals between multiple devices. This way you can connect your PlayStation 5 to multiple TVs or monitors with an HDMI splitter. Likewise, a splitter allows you to connect multiple consoles to one TV.

If an HDMI splitter is not incompatible with your TV or PS5, it can interrupt the connection between the two devices.

Remove any HDMI splitter connected to your PS5 or TV and connect the console directly to your TV. If your TV detects the PS5 after that, then the HDMI splitter is the problem. When shopping for a new HDMI splitter, make sure it is PS5 compatible.

6. Try a different HDMI cable

Counterfeit or counterfeit cables from third parties may not connect your PS5 to your television or monitor. Connect your PlayStation 5 to your TV using the HDMI to HDMI cable that came with the console. If the original HDMI cable is broken or damaged, purchase a replacement from your nearest authorized SONY store or dealer.

You can use an HDMI cable from another manufacturer. However, make sure it’s an Ultra High Speed (or HDMI 2.1) cable with an HDMI logo/wording on both connectors.

While the PS5 has an HDMI 2.1 port and works best with HDMI 2.1 cables, you can still connect the console to TVs with older HDMI standards. If your TV doesn’t have HDMI 2.1 ports, you can connect your PS5 using HDMI 2.1 cables.

HDMI 2.1 cables (or Ultra High-Speed HDMI cables) are backwards compatible with older HDMI standards/devices. However, your TV won’t play video games at the highest resolution or refresh rate because it uses an old HDMI port.

7. Try a different HDMI port

Move the HDMI cable to a different port on your TV and make sure both devices connect. Don’t forget to switch your TV input source to the new HDMI port you connected the PS5 to.

8. Change the HDMI signal format of the TV

Some TV brands (e.g. SONY) recommend changing your TV’s HDMI signal format if your PS5 or other devices cannot connect via HDMI. Supposing your TV’s HDMI signal format is set to “Standard”, the problem can be solved by switching it to “Extended”. Some TV brands/models have this option as “Enhanced format” or “Enhanced format (8K)”.

If your TV has multiple HDMI ports, change the signal format of the specific HDMI port your PS5 is connected to.

Enhanced HDMI is a high quality signal format that unlocks the full bandwidth of your TV’s HDMI port. Plus, the improved signal format ensures you get 4K HDR gameplay on the PS5.

Switch to the “Standard” signal format if your PS5 cannot connect to your TV with enhanced HDMI settings. Refer to your TV’s instruction manual or contact the manufacturer for specific instructions on switching the HDMI signal format.

9. Turn off your TV

If the problems persist, turn off your TV. Switch off your TV with the remote control or unplug the power adapter. Wait about a minute, plug the TV back in and set the TV’s input source to the HDMI port the PS5 is connected to

10. Clean the PS5 HDMI port

Foreign material in your PS5’s HDMI port can interfere with the console’s connection to your TV. Check your PS5’s HDMI port for dirt, dust, debris, or gunk. Use a soft brush to remove foreign material. If you have a can of compressed air, a few blades in the HDMI port can loosen dust and grime.

You should also clean your TV’s HDMI port(s), especially if it won’t connect to a device.

11. Update your TV’s firmware

If you are using a smart TV, software problems may prevent it from displaying images from HDMI devices. Go to your TV’s settings menu, update the firmware or operating system and check if that fixes the problem.

We also recommend that you configure your TV to automatically update its firmware when a new version is available. Check for “Automatic Software Update” or “Automatic Firmware Update” in your TV’s software settings menu.

You should also be able to update your TV’s firmware from the manufacturer’s website, depending on the make or model of your TV. Contact your TV manufacturer for more information about installing the latest system software on your TV.

12. Try a different TV or monitor

Connect the PS5 to another TV or monitor using a compatible high-speed HDMI cable. The console’s HDMI port is likely faulty if the new monitor or TV isn’t receiving video signals from your PS5. Try another cable on the monitor and check if it works.

13. Change the resolution of PS5 video output in safe mode

Some PS5 users fixed the black screen issue by changing their PS5’s video resolution to HDCP 1.4. High-Bandwidth Digital Content Production (HDCP) is a content protection protocol to prevent unauthorized recording of content on the PS5.

PS5 supports the latest HDCP version (HDCP 2.3) and automatically switches between other versions (HDCP 2.2 and HDCP 1.4) depending on your TV model. Set your PS5 to use HDCP 1.4 if your TV only shows a black screen.

To do that, you must first boot your PS5 into safe mode.

  1. Press and hold the power button on the PS5 for three seconds to turn off the game console.
  1. Let the … Let Go power button and wait for the console to turn off.
  2. Press and hold the power button until you hear the PS5 beep twice.

Note that the second beep usually comes about seven seconds after the first beep. So keep holding the power button and release at the second beep. That will boot your PS5 into safe mode.

  1. Connect the DualSense controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
  1. Select Change video output.
  1. Select Change resolution.
  1. Select HDCP 1.4 . only and select Restarting on the confirmation page.

Your TV should now detect visual signals from the game console. Make sure the PS5 is properly connected to your TV with a compatible cable.

If your PS5 still can’t connect to your TV even in safe mode, the HDMI port or motherboard is probably damaged. Contact PlayStation Support or visit a PlayStation Repair Center to have your PS5 examined for hardware issues. You may get a new console if your PS5 is still under warranty and the connection problem is due to a manufacturing defect.

If your PS5 connects to monitors other than your TV, please contact the manufacturer or reset the TV to factory settings.
