Despite some other animated…attempts in the past, Nintendo announced earlier this year that they will be doing an official film adaptation featuring everyone’s favorite plumber: Mario! With Chris Pratt playing the eponymous role, the cast also includes Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. The film, whose title is not yet known, is scheduled for Easter weekend 2023.

The last of us

The critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic video game is coming to the small screen as a 10-episode series sometime in 2023. Helped by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and produced by Neil Druckmann, the game director of The last of usthe series would be an adaptation of the first game in The last of us series. With Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, The last of us will definitely be on most gamers’ watch lists in 2023.

Untitled Knuckles Series

Branching off the hilarious live-action Sonic the hedgehog movies, the titular red echidna is getting his own series on Paramount+! Idris Elba will reprise his role in the series, which will debut sometime in 2023, launching the official SCU (Sonic Cinematic Universe). Sure, maybe that’s not an “official” thing yet, but hey, maybe it should be!

Minecraft: the movie

This one is a bit up in the air, but from April 2022 the popular game is Minecraft is still slated to be adapted into a movie possibly starring Jason Momoa. Jared Hess, director of Napoleon Dynamite, is set to lead the project. As of now, the movie doesn’t currently have a release date, but that just means there’s still plenty of time to get in Minecraft before the movie comes out!

BioShock

In early 2022, news broke that Netflix had decided to… BioShock property from development hell, announcing an upcoming film adaptation of the franchise. Currently there are no details on casting, writers or directors, so this one is likely further down the pipeline. Nevertheless, it will be great to explore the retro-futuristic world of BioShock brought to life on the small screen sometime in the near future!

Peacock recently decided to get into the video game customization space after giving the go-ahead for a series order to turned metal, a half-hour comedic live-action adaptation of the highly popular video game series. Anthony Mackie is the executive producer and stars on the project as John Doe, a “clever milkman who talks as fast as he drives.” The series comes to Peacock based on an original version created by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool and Zombieland) and will be written by Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith, who will also be showing the new series.

Assassin’s Creed

Despite the harsh criticism and the cashier reception Assassin’s Creed movie came back in 2016, Ubisoft and Netflix recently teamed up to develop a number of TV shows based on the Assassin’s Creed spell. First, Netflix has planned a live-action genre-bending series alongside animated and anime adaptations of the source material. The series is produced by Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik of Ubisoft.

Resident Evil

Based on the iconic Resident Evil series, this Netflix TV series is the second adaptation based on the Capcom franchise. However, this series is set in its own universe, while still building on established Resident Evil lore. The cast of the series includes Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska and Tamara Smart and premiered on Netflix on July 14!

While it hasn’t been officially titled yet, Netflix has announced a live-action TV adaptation of PlayStation’s iconic Horizon franchise, which will reportedly begin filming soon! The sci-fi RPG franchise has long been celebrated for its dynamic world rooted in deep lore and compelling characters, especially its protagonist Aloy, making it the perfect piece of IP to adapt in a long-running TV show!

Based on the critically acclaimed 2018 god of warAmazon and Sony have both confirmed plans to launch a god of war TV adaptation during an investor presentation in May. The series is led by the creators of the vastnessMark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, as well as Rafe Judkins, the showrunner for The wheel of time. the 2018 god of war was widely acclaimed for its subtle, intimate story of a father and son’s grief for their wife and mother, respectively. While no release date or production schedule has been announced, it is likely that the god of war series will be a must-watch for gamers and fantasy lovers alike.

Similar in tone and style to the film adaptation Detective PikachuVariety already announced in 2021 that a pokemon live-action series was in early development at Netflix. While not much more news has come out since then, Variety stated that Joe Henderson (Match) was attached to write and run the new series. There is currently no casting or release date information available for the new series, but it is certainly a long awaited one. Personally, I just hope Team Rocket makes an appearance in this!

Cyberpunk: Edge Runners

Based on the controversial but popular video game Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is an animated television series coming to Netflix in September 2022. The series will be a “self-contained 10-episode anime that follows the story of a street kid trying to survive in Night City.” The series follows this street kid until he is forced to become an ‘edgerunner’, a mercenary who must use extreme methods to tackle any job.

Set in a futuristic alternate reality where nuclear fallout consumed the United States in the year 2077, the precipitation Adaptation of the TV series, which comes from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films, will begin production sometime in 2022. Ultimately, the series will premiere on Prime Video and will be broadcast by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel) and Graham Wagner (Silicone Valley). I have seen many gamers completely lost for hours in the precipitation series, so with a bit of luck the series will be just as captivating!

Metal Gear Solid

While the film is supposedly still in development, Oscar Isaac is currently attached to star as Snake in the film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid after politely throwing in his hat for the part during an interview for his movie Triple border. Metal Gear Solid follows Snake, a skilled infiltrator during an alternate history where the Cold War lasted well into the 1990s. Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the director of Kong: Skull Island, is currently set to direct the film adaptation. No release date has been announced yet.

Tomb Raider

Netflix announced last September that Hayley Atwell, who is perhaps best known for portraying Peggy Carter in the MCU, will voice Lara Croft in an upcoming anime television adaptation of the Tomb Raider spell. While Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise has seen several movie adaptations in the past, this will be the game’s first step into the anime space and will likely come to the platform in late 2022 or early 2023; however, no exact release date has been confirmed.

Although not officially confirmed, it was reported by several outlets at the end of 2021, mainly Deadline, that Amazon Studios was approaching a deal to develop a series adapted from the sci-fi video game franchise. Mass effect has long been acclaimed for its rich knowledge and compelling storytelling, and it’s clear that this would be a huge win for gamers everywhere! Hopefully we’ll get confirmation on this sooner rather than later.
