Despite its rocky launch, No Man’s Sky has become one of the biggest, most complex, and most exciting sci-fi games out there. A series of massive updates have overhauled old mechanics and introduced new features to the game, giving players plenty to do.

One of the most exciting and highly anticipated additions to No Man’s Sky was the recording of pirates with the Outlaws update. Outlaws added a ton of new content to the game, including Solar Ships, Outlaw Stations, and Solar Ships. One cosmetic addition in particular caught the attention of players: the hood known as the Shroud of Freedom. Here’s everything players need to know about unlocking these elusive cosmetics.

Accept the mission

To unlock the Shroud of Freedom, the player must undertake the “Under a Rebel Star” mission. To start the mission, the player must visit a normal galaxy (a system that is not controlled by pirates). The game has a large map, but is fortunately easy to navigate. Once there, the player must activate his ship’s pulse drive to the empty space. After a few moments you will exit the pulse drive and an emergency broadcast from the spaceship Signal Echo will pass over the communicator. Answer the Communicator and accept the coordinates in the message.

The distress beacon

View the logs in the distress beacon, then choose the option “Recover cockpit recording” followed by “Take rendezvous beacon”. Doing so will activate sentry drones in the area, forcing the player to fight or flee from these deadly robots. Once the sentries are no longer a threat, activate the Rendezvous Beacon in the inventory to receive another mission token.

Fly to the planet with the new meeting point and use the Starship Scanner to ping the beacon. There will be an answer about the Communicator, so open it to get the message before proceeding to the next target: another planet within the system. Land on the surface and use the Sweep Scanner again to find the next location: an observatory with a terminal in it. Communicate with the terminal to receive both a message and the Ticket to Freedom. Go to the inventory and select the Ticket to accept the invitation. There are only a few steps left before the player can return to his illegal ways.

Outlaw Skies

The mission marker is now moved to a pirate-controlled star system. Jump there, go to the Outlaw Station, which pirates use for smuggling and other nefarious activities, and talk to the NPCs inside, choosing the “Ask for the Voice of Freedom” option. After talking to enough NPCs, the player is awarded the Shroud of Freedom. Before you leave, check the Subverted Station Core and choose “Request the Voice of Freedom” to receive the next objective of the mission.

Exit the station via the ship to receive a task from the Station Core to disrupt traffic records. Accept the task of receiving a forged passport. Jump to another regulated galaxy and go to his space station. Interact with the Station Core there and select the “Restore Standing” option, which will use the Forged Passport.

Exit the station again via the ship to complete the mission and receive the Glorious Survivor title. The player can now put on the Shroud of Liberty with any Appearance Modifier (found on space stations). At this point, the shroud can only be worn as an anomaly, so the player must select that race in the Appearance Modifier. Now the player has something to show off next to a shiny new freighter.

No Man’s Sky is now available on PC, macOS, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch.
