This guide will help players find and refine Laterite, an important natural resource in Astroneer, to the aluminum they need.

There are many sophisticated resources in Astroneer, and Aluminum is one that players will definitely want in some quantity. The process of earning aluminum revolves around a natural resource called Laterite, although some fans may not know where to find it. This guide is there to help players find Laterite in Astroneerand it will also provide details on exactly how the raw material is refined into aluminum once some of it is obtained.

Astroneer: how to get laterite?

To obtain Laterite, players must watch below the surface from every planet in Astroneercaves, which you may encounter while exploring, provide easy access to these subterranean areas, although fans should exercise some caution when descending into them. Players who fail to heed this warning may find that their progress toward earning Laterite is temporarily halted after their character has fallen a significant distance and died.

Once a survival video game fan has safely entered a cave, they must begin to search the walls and floor for piles blue-red circles† These piles are usually cylindrical in shape and they are indeed nodes of laterite. When locating these nodes, players simply need to use their terrain tools to extract the Laterite, and they may want to collect quite a bit of the resource before turning it into the aluminum they need.

For the sake of completeness, it's worth noting that Laterite is also available from the Trading platforma module in Astroneer which is made in the Medium Printer. More specifically, players can switch a scrap for one laterite on the Platform, although it is not recommended to rely heavily on this method. It's indeed not particularly difficult to extract Laterite from caves, and fans will probably be better served by saving their scraps for bigger things to happen in the future.

Astroneer: making aluminum

After collecting some Laterite, players have to take it to their melting furnace† Just to be clear, this crafting module was made at the Medium Printer and fans have probably used it before to make things like ceramics in Astroneer† In fact, the aluminum-making process is very similar to the ceramic-making process in that players simply have to feed laterite into the smelter and wait for it to produce the refined raw material they are interested in.

Astroneer is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
