Asgard’s Thor Odinson has returned to theaters with Thor: love and thunder and this makes it the perfect time to play as the god of thunder in video games. Even before Chris Hemsworth first portrayed the character in 2011, Thor was in multiple Marvel games.
This would remain so even after the MCU made Thor a modern day action hero. There are games in the MCU and some of them are heavily inspired by them. These games all range from RPGs to action-adventure games, to live service titles that are still in the works. Those looking to play Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor may also find what they’re looking for in some of these titles.
10 Thor: God of Thunder (2011)
Based on the first Thor movie, Thor: God of Thunder is more or less a rip-off of the original God Of War trilogy. The titular hero plays the same way that hack-and-slash gameplay style, only with a hammer with new upgrades to unlock during the game. Like most games based on Phase One MCU movies, it’s a rushed effort to make a game based on a movie.
It’s not the worst game to play though, as it can be a fun time waster as the campaign can be beaten in just over two hours. It also features actors like Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston reprising their roles, making for a unique experience as they lend their voices to events that never happened in the film.
9 LEGO Marvel’s Avengers (2016)
Where other LEGO Marvel games are set in their own Marvel universe, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is the only one based on the MCU. In particular, it narrates the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron in the same silly way usually seen in LEGO games.
Other than that, it’s more of the same quality content that TT Games usually offers. Collect lots of studs, destroy the environment, solve puzzles and unlock a huge number of characters. This includes Thor and what he looked like Age of Ultron as well as an unlockable Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor.
8 Marvel Contest of Champions (2014)
Content Of Champions, one of the longest-running Marvel mobile games, is dotted with many characters with different versions of characters. Thor has its base version but a variant based on Thor: Ragnarok. Most recently, Jane Foster AKA The Mighty Thor, Valkyrie, and Gorr The God Butcher have all been added to the game.
Additionally, there are other playable characters including Hela, Loki, Korg, and Mangog from Thor’s mythology. They all have their own unique skills and benefits that they bring to the 1v1 mobile tournament fighter. Players can build their own team of unique Thor themed teams.
7 Marvel Strike Force (2018)
If mashing the button is not preferred, Marvel Strike Force offers a more tactical experience as a turn-based RPG. This mobile game also allows fans to create their own dream team of Thor characters including Odinson, Heimdall, Hela, The Mighty Thor, Valkyrie, Lady Sif, Loki and more.
All of these characters can also be combined with other characters to create unique and dynamic teams. Marvel Strike Force already has plenty of teams to choose from and put together, leading to perks and passive skills as a result.
6 Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order (2019)
Exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3 was a welcome return of the classic RPG series to the Marvel universe. It has its own lineup of great characters that stand out in the roster. Like its predecessor, it combines much-anticipated characters with atypical additions to the roster.
Unfortunately, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 3 contains only two characters from the Thor mythos, even with the DLC expansions. Thor Odinson is obvious, but Loki joins the roster for the first time in this series. The two make a powerful pair, especially when associated with other heroes and villains such as Spider-Man or Magneto.
5 Marvel Future Struggle (2015)
Adopting a roguelike RPG style, Marvel: Future Battle Probably has the largest selection of the Marvel mobile games since its release in 2015. Each character also has alternate costumes with recent costume additions such as Thor, Mighty Thor and Valkyrie’s designs from Thor: love and thunder.
Volstagg of the Warriors Three is playable as well as Odin, Beta Ray Bill, Angela, Malekith, The Destroyer, Hela, Enchantress and many more. Future Struggle easily has the largest number of playable Thor characters than any other game out there.
4 LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (2017)
Now with a bigger open world and an even bigger roster of characters, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 features different heroes and villains across space and time. Spider-Gwen, Doctor Strange, She-Hulk and, of course, Thor all feature in the original Kang The Conqueror story.
These characters are also all free to roam, and many with unique animations and transformations depending on the character. There are different versions of Thor, The Mighty Thor himself, Enchantress, Hela, Heimdall and many more to play throughout the story and many activities. It’s essentially more of what LEGO Marvel’s Avengers brought, but even better.
3 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006)
For years, Marvel Ultimate Alliance was the closest thing to an Avengers movie they would ever see. It had Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and several heroes from other teams working together to fight Doctor Doom, Loki, The Mandarin and Mephisto.
It felt like a big crossover event from the comics that allowed fans to be the heroes and create their own teams. It’s one of the many superhero games that deserve a remaster because they still hold up so much. Thor is one of the largest members of Ultimate Alliance, featured in all story segments alongside Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine.
2 Marvel’s Avengers (2020)
There’s no denying that Crystal Dynamics had a tough launch with Marvel’s Avengers but more than two years later, with many content drops and patches, the live service title has improved. Even from launch, the main campaign for Marvel’s Avengers was the best of it, setting up a new version of the Marvel universe with talented voice actors like Laura Bailey and Nolan North taking on characters.
Thor Odinson was one of the stars, portrayed as a wiser warrior who stole the show during the main campaign. Since then, characters like Black Panther and Spider-Man have been great additions to an already high-quality roster of heroes. Recently, Jane Foster became playable as the Mighty Thor, allowing fans to experience playing as a god of thunder in two different ways.
1 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (2009)
Despite finding a working copy of Ultimate Alliance 2 since it’s a hassle, it’s worth it because it takes the formula already set up with the first game and improves on it. There are now two campaigns instead of one, the roster is even more diverse thanks to the addition of villains and the RPG elements are even stronger.
Thor returns for this one and he’s even better than before. He has fewer costumes, but his gameplay has been improved with new skills, powers and fusion attacks. With the updated images and an even stronger story, Ultimate Alliance 2 is an ideal way to play as one of the featured characters.
