Sonic the Hedgehog is the swift-footed mascot of video game company Sega and the star of several equally fast-paced video games. Since debuting in the early 1990s, he’s been sprinting fast while keeping platform games from companies like Nintendo on their toes. This is all thanks to its incredible anatomy, with the anthropomorphic hedgehog going way beyond that of the average spiny rodent.
Sonic’s dashing array of powers goes beyond just amazing speed, though, as the Blue Blur uses all sorts of amazing abilities in its quest to defeat Dr. Defeat Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik and secure power artifacts such as the Chaos Emeralds. Some of these are linked to his speed, while other abilities of his are somewhat overlooked. Here are five spectacular facts about Sega’s supersonic hero.
Sonic the Hedgehog is lightning fast
Obviously, Sonic’s greatest strength is its high speed, which allows it to deliver feats that the games could never adequately portray. Able to start rolling around at the speed of sound without a moment’s notice, Sonic’s speed has earned him the status of being one of, if not the fastest creatures in his universe. He can move back just as fast, making it impossible to stop him. His usual range is listed as being in the Mach one to two range, although this is refuted by Sonic himself, claiming such speeds are child’s play for him.
Sonic’s speed is so great that he is surrounded by a shield of blue energy when he really starts to take off. This shield can destroy nearby objects in its path, including enemy robots, and clears the way for Sonic to run anywhere he pleases. To better facilitate these immense speeds, Sonic uses the “Super Peel Out” technique introduced in time travel Sonic CD to build momentum by running in place.
Sonic has perfect maneuverability and precision
To keep up with his speed, Sonic’s body has incredible reflexes and agility. This allows him to dodge or move in such a way that he completely avoids oncoming obstacles. This extends to his senses, allowing him to perceive incoming danger that would otherwise not be seen by others. Tricks and showing off are the usual results of this physical perfection, with later Sonic titles that award Sonic in-game points for timing his jumps with special moves. He can also react to his environment in this way, casually riding rails as if he were on a skateboard or fake snowboarding over frozen hills.
Sonic can interact with the Chaos Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic
Sonic is one of the creatures in the whole Sonic the hedgehog franchise that can tap into the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. The usual way this concept manifests is Sonic becoming Super Sonic. After collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic, turning his blue fur into a bright yellow and spiky, giving him nearly invulnerability and the power of flying. Collect the Super Emeralds in Sonic the hedgehog 3 will transform Sonic into an even more powerful form: Hyper Sonic. This brightly colored state makes Sonic faster than ever, even eliminating his need for air bubbles underwater.
Another Emerald-based power that Sonic can use is Chaos Control. This means that they manipulate time and space themselves, and when two users activate the ability, they can actually travel through time. This was featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, in which Sonic used the power with Shadow and Silver. Other versions of the same power temporarily stop the time around the user.
Sonic is incredibly strong and handy for its size
One overlooked aspect of Sonic’s body is how strong it is. Despite its lightweight frame, Sonic is a lot heartier than it looks as it can easily break through rock and metal. As a result of his running, his legs are quite strong, allowing him to casually kick enemies, including some of Eggman’s larger robots. He has even been shown to tear robots apart with his bare hands, suggesting that his arms are just as powerful.
There is also a physical toughness that goes along with this power, where Sonic’s body can withstand powerful forces and shocking explosions. This explains why he takes no damage when he blasts away at tremendous speeds. It has been shown to be able to survive falls from great heights, probably because of how powerful and developed its legs are. His speed even increases his healing, meaning Sonic’s body can recover from wounds and trauma much faster than other creatures.
Sonic has the uncanny ability to get inside a spinning ball
Like regular hedgehogs, Sonic can curl up into a ball-like shape to defend itself from threats and roll on the ground. This ability, best known as the ‘Spin Attack’, can be combined with Sonic’s speed, with seemingly no damage to Sonic’s spine or limbs. With faster than ever taking off and sending Sonic jetting through corkscrews, Sonic’s Spin Attack is easily its most useful and iconic power.
Later games enhanced the Spin Attack with the Homing Attack, which allows Sonic’s rolling ball to form target enemies and increase his jump after defeating them. When you use a greater degree of Sonic’s speed, it becomes the Light Speed Attack, which allows Sonic to destroy and destroy all enemies in an area at once. With these powers, the hedgehog can not only defeat multiple enemies, but also speed through small corridors and rubble. While this ball shape may seem harmless, it’s the ultimate proof that Sonic is indeed the fastest around.
