2006 brought the release of the powerful (and expensive) Playstation 3. In the early days of the PS3, there were notoriously very few games to play, but at the end of its life, the console was a very respectable library. In fact, the seventh generation of consoles (PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii) is arguably the greatest generation of all time – the PS3 itself has some genre-defining exclusives which are repeated to this day.
Looking back at this vast library, there are almost too many great games choose from.
10. LittleBigPlanet
The first LittleBigPlanet was a revolutionary game-and cute to boot. This side scroller was best known for its deep and engaging level editor in addition to the cute character customization that has become synonymous with the IP.
Little big planet built on the successes of similar level editor games, such as Alien Hominid, to deliver a uniquely detailed experience. while it has slightly faded in terms of popularity, other games such as Super Mario Maker and Dreams have followed in his footsteps. By giving players the tools to design their own levels, the content of these types of games is virtually limitless. Unfortunately the servers are for Little big planet 1 and 2 are permanently disabled. However, LittleBigPlanet 3’s servers stay upand LBP3 is a perfectly usable option for fans of the series.
9. Portal 2
Like most Valve games, the original Portal was a genius. When the sequel came out in 2011, players were thrilled to find out Portal 2 was just as good as (if not better than) its predecessor.
Portal 2 expanded the first game with a more in-depth story, new gameplay mechanics, and a co-op game mode. It’s worked out diaphragm science and GLaDOSand it also added some fun new characters like Wheatley and Cave Johnson. The gameplay mechanics established in the first game were expanded with some unique twists-the blue Rejection Gel (the bouncy stuff) was especially fun. The co-op mode, which offers all-new puzzles to explore with a friend, was also a great addition.
8. Catherine
Catherine was a bizarre horror/romance/puzzle platformer created by Atlus, developers of the Persona series. It was presented as a “Golden Playhouse” game, suggesting that other one-off games may be released under the Golden Playhouse banner in the future. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, Catherine is still the one and only.
Players take control Vincent Brooks, a twenty-something with a curse. In his dreams he must climbs of a huge tower or die. This is where most of the gameplay takes place; Vincent must solve puzzles by moving blocks to create paths to the tower. The game is extremely nice for some, and deeply maddening for others. Reminiscent of Persona-like social situations, the story follows Vincent as he struggles with bonding issues as he is torn between his old girlfriend, Katherine, and a new affair named Catherine. The recent remake is good tooif you can overcome the weird dealings with a new trans character.
Metal Gear Solid as franchise is wonderfully insane and sometimes shockingly poignant. Every game in the series is groundbreaking in one way or another, and MGS4 is no exception. In MGS4, the famous protagonist sturdy hose is called “Old Serpent” because of a medical problem with accelerated aging. The game does great justice to Snake’s “last mission” in a war-torn world.
MGS4 introduced several new gameplay mechanics to the series, including: improved third-party controlon sight weapon deployment and customization, and more. It was also the first game in the series to use the FOX engine who became famous for his great graphics. although MGS5 maybe the series best game in terms of to play, MGS4 left a big impression with his stellar story.
6. Fallout: New Vegas
although published by Bethesda and built using their engine, Fallout: New Vegas was written and developed by Obsidian. Their excellent storytelling, combined with Bethesda’s more modern game design, made New Vegas the best game in the fallout series.
Fallout: New Vegas featured interesting moral dilemmaspolitical commentaries, funny charactersand fascinating quests. The game also had several huge DLCsall of which were worthy follow ups to the main campaign. Fans of Fallout, Bethesda games or just RPGs in general owe it to themselves to experience this masterpiece.
5. Persona 5
Persona 5 was released in 2017, years after the PS4 took the world by storm. However, the PS3 version was almost identical to the PS4 version, and it’s the only Persona game playable on PS3. In fact, this stylish title is arguably the console’s best JRPG despite its release 11 years after the console’s first launch.
Persona 5 introduced polished gameplay and images on top of beautiful art, funky fresh musicand telling life stories. To be characters are usually) well written and sweet. The story, while meandering at times, was entertaining and often sincerely. Persona 5 delivers tons of content for its price tag, clocking in at a average playing time of about 100 hours.
4. Dark Souls
While From Software’s first game, Demon Souls, was a moderate success (and exclusive to Playstation), Dark Souls was the game that really defined a new genre. It has since become a gaming icon, the benchmark against which other difficult games are compared.
In fact, Dark Souls was so good that it succeeded despite several shortcomings. Performance was the worst offenderas some areas were plagued with framerate issues in the original version of the game (looking at you, Blight Town). The famous no-compromise gameplay and unparalleled level design more than made up for that. While Dark Souls can be extremely difficult, it is rarely felt dishonest. This created a satisfying sense of progress where the player improved in skill in addition to his character’s improved stats.
3. Uncharted
Uncharted is an undoubtedly great series of PlayStation exclusive games. The first game in the seriesreleased in 2007, set a new benchmark in front of story adventure games. It was a lighthearted, cinematic adventure with fun gameplay and a handsome protagonist – and really, what more could you want?
Inspired by Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones, Uncharted presented these tried-and-true archetypes in a polished, entertaining way. There’s a reason people were drawn to these well-known tropes. There’s no denying that a good “popcorn movies” is attractive. Uncharted illustrated the idea of a good “popcorn game.”
2. Grand Theft Auto V
GTA V’s single-player story mode earns its spot on this list based on its own merits, completely independent of the ridiculous success of GTA Online. GTA V refined the core gameplay of the series mechanics to the cutting edge. Complete with breathtaking graphics that last to this day, the game has helped its developer, rock starreach a astonishing level of success.
GTA V is still at the top of the sales charts despite the fact that it originally came out nine years ago. It amazed the world when it did. The story is entertainingbut it’s real shines in addictive gameplay. More arcade-like driving notably, feels near-perfect, a big improvement over GTA IV’s somewhat realistic and impractical handling.
1. The Last of Us
Towards the end of the PS3’s life, The Last of Us became the Golden standard of the story in the third person shooter genre. Bad Dog took all their lessons from the not mapped series and delivered a more mature and deeply emotional journey with The Last of Us.
Although set in a decaying world full of monsters, it is truly a deeply personal one story about parenting. It’s almost impossible to discuss the story without ruining it, but anyone who hasn’t played it yet The last of us owes it to oneself play it as soon as possible. To be Naughty Dog at their best.
